Bringing your stallion to us is as easy as 1, 2, 3...
- Give us a call to talk over your requirements, and get your vet to come out to perform pre-stud disease testing for CEM, EVA, EIA (which should be submitted to the VLA) and Strangles.
- Bring your stallion to the stud, meet the people who will be looking after him, and see him settle in. We will then arrange all veterinary work, further disease testing if required, semen collections, freezing, distribution, or whatever services you wish us to perform.
- Once your stallion's say is complete you can come and pick him up. Frozen semen can be distributed as and when necessary, and if you have any queries after you've gone home - we're only a phone call away!
Semen collection and distribution service
We offer you the option to send your stallion to our stallion unit, and let us take care of all of your clients' requirements for semen. Resident stallions are housed in a dedicated stallion unit, with large boxes with rubber matting, drinkers, deep dust-free paper beds and ad-lib haylage. The boys are cared for by a consistent team of experienced grooms and stallion handlers. The resident stallions have special turn-out paddocks, and access to the arena for ridden or lunge work. All semen is processed by our experienced and highly trained technicians, and dispatched with all the appropriate paperwork.

Semen freezing (for UK & Worldwide export)
Our DEFRA approved stallion unit is certified for Worldwide semen export.
We used the latest technology and techniques to help make semen freezing available to everyone. Our semen freezing work is undertaken by Jamie Anderson BA Physiol (Oxon) of Equine Reproduction Ltd. Jamie has trained with Jos Mottershead & Kathy St. Martin of Equine-Reproduction.com, Dr Guillermo Balbuena of the CRIA embryo transfer centre in Cordoba, Argentina, and the team at the Equine Reproduction Lab at Colorado State University.
To help keep semen freezing (and its cost) as simple as possible, we have put together some guide pricing, which can be viewed in this table. Guide prices include livery, health tests, semen collection and freezing. They may vary dependant on the individual stallion's semen quality and quantity.
Semen is stored free of charge for the first three months after it is frozen. After that time, we make a charge of £18/month for up to 300 0.5ml straws. Bulk pricing is available on request.
Semen can be processed and distributed within in the UK for £95 inluding paperwork, shipping, and rental of a dry shipper. International prices are available on application, and shared loads may be available.
We are the first European centre ever to be approved by Equine-Reproduction.com as one of their certified freezing locations. Jos Mottershead and Kathy St. Martin are two of the best-known reproduction technicians in the world, and we are very proud to have had our freezing approved by them. The certification is an assurance that our lab is run to the highest standards, that our technicians receive regular training, and that our overall laboratory standards are what you would expect from a world-class facility.

Semen collection training
We also take stallions in for semen collection training- where they can be taught to collect from the dummy mare, or through ground collection where the stallion remains standing on all fours throughout the collection process.
Training will take, on average 5 days with a range of 3-10 days. We train stallions in a way which will help them to be able to collect without a teaser mare. As such, we begin all training without having a mare in the semen collection barn. The process takes a lot of patience, but is worthwhile when you have a stallion who is aroused purely by the sight of the dummy mare (and perhaps some oestrus mare's urine).
Our charge for dummy training is £75/hour or £300 whichever is the lower at the completion of training. We are generally happy that a stallion has been successfully trained when he has been collected 3 times with relative ease and consistency.
